Resilience Crew Firefighter

Salary:

£10 per hour during any period of training 

£150 per operational shift worked (up to maximum of 12 hours in duration)

Plus an additional £250 annual payment for full attendance of all allocated training courses.

 

Contract:

You will be contracted to commit to a number of training days throughout the year, in addition to a two week initial training course.  There will be no guarantee of future work as this depends on the needs of the Service.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is one of the largest Fire and Rescue Services in the UK with over 2,000 employees and 41 fire stations. Our purpose is to ensure that we save, protect and improve the quality of life of the people in Greater Manchester. We do that in many ways but supporting our culturally diverse communities of over 2.5m GM residents is at the heart of the service that we deliver and it’s a service that we’re really proud of.

 

We are looking to recruit and train Resilience Crews to provide fire and rescue cover during periods of industrial action. Any industrial action could mean that Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service has a very limited number of operational staff working on days of industrial action, and we have a legal duty to find a way of providing sufficient emergency cover for the communities of Greater Manchester.

 

There will be no average day for a member of our Resilience Crew. You could be attending a fire or a road traffic collision, helping to save lives and providing emergency fire and rescue cover for the people of Greater Manchester. The Resilience Crew will be called on for any dates where industrial action is planned.

 

Industrial action is a democratic choice of colleagues within the Service. What this means for this role is that industrial action may be visible and present outside stations that you would be working from. In such circumstances, support and assistance will always be provided to enable you to provide this essential service cover.

 

There may be a requirement to work 2 consecutive shifts (up to12 hours each shift). Therefore, a Resilience Crew member could work for 24 hours with appropriate rest periods included.

 

We will provide you with an intensive training programme and all of the support you will need. You will work in teams drawn from people who you will train with and this will include some of our experienced staff.

 

You will be required to be medically and physically fit and the national Firefighter Selection Test (NFST) will be an integral part of our selection process.

 

 

Minimum requirements:

 

 

  • You are 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • You are eligible to live and work in the UK or have proof of right to work.
  • You are required to:

-       Pass the National Fitness Selection Tests – which includes working within confined spaces, a manual dexterity test and being able to work at height.

-       Undertake an interview

-       Undergo in-depth medical examinations to ensure you are suitable to undertake demanding firefighting duties.

-       Successful applicants are required to undertake a Basic Disclosure check and provide references.

 

Training (if successful)

 

You must be available to attend a three week training course, dates to be confirmed.
In addition, training will take place on some weekends and you will need to be available to train between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. although the training day may vary in length.
