About you –

Greater Manchester has a history of doing things differently, of innovation and pioneering new ways of doing things. We believe that involving people in our work leads to better decisions and outcomes, and we want residents, businesses, the community and voluntary sector, and academics to help us develop strategies and commissioned programmes, as well as tell us whether we are making a difference.

We are looking for somebody who shares these beliefs, and is passionate about citizen engagement, as well as experienced in developing and delivering innovative engagement and communication strategies. This includes solid experience in a range of approaches to participation from informing, to consultation, to meaningful co-production.

You’ll have a proven history of executing effective and successful consultation activity; building strong, reciprocal relationships between citizens, communities, public services and the private sector to facilitate involvement with our work.

We are particularly looking for someone with a robust understanding of the principles of good public engagement. Ideally you would also have experience of statutory consultations within relevant policy areas.

The role also requires someone with strong influencing skills who can navigate complex political and organisational landscapes.

The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic and supportive leader, who work independently, in order to continually contribute to an excellent team.

You should have a desire to protect and enhance the public image and reputation of Greater Manchester, and flourish in a fast-paced local government environment.

About us -

Greater Manchester is one of the country's most successful city-regions. Home to more than 2.7 million people and with an economy bigger than that of Wales or Northern Ireland, our vision is to make it one of the best in the world to grow up, get on and grow old. Working closely with the ten Greater Manchester Councils that make up the GMCA, this gives local people more control over issues such as transport, regeneration, homelessness and attracting investment into the city-region.

As an employer, the GMCA is made up of a number of key Greater Manchester strategic functions and service providers including the Office of the Mayor of Greater Manchester; Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS); police, crime and criminal justice; homelessness; culture; environment; work and skills; and the Greater Manchester Ageing Hub.

GMCA’s Communications and Engagement Team is responsible for ensuring that all parts of the GMCA has a coherent, consistent and coordinated approach to communications, engagement and media, all of which is delivered to a high standard. We work with numerous stakeholders, including our own colleagues, officers in partner organisations, members of the public, elected members, journalists, and industry experts. This role will be based in within our engagement function, leading the Engagement Team as part of the wider Communications and Engagement leadership team.

We value the diversity of our employees, and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects our diverse communities across Greater Manchester.
