Your role

Greater Manchester Combined Authority recently published the Greater Manchester Gender-Based Abuse Strategy - more information can be found here.  This is a radical ten-year plan aimed at effectively tackling this global and widespread issue.

In his foreword to the strategy, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester said, “Through implementation of this radical ten-year strategy I believe Greater Manchester can show the way globally, demonstrating how a city-region strongly coming together as one, can deliver real social change.  We do not accept gender-based violence simply as a fact of life that goes back generations.”

We will shortly be launching a Greater Manchester Gender-Based Violence Board and we are seeking expressions of interest for a number of spaces on the Board from Greater Manchester residents who have lived experience of gender-based violence.

We believe that being a member of the Board offers an exciting opportunity to play a central role in that ambition and would very much welcome expressions of interest from all individuals irrespective of age, disability, Tran’s status and non-binary identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

About you

We are looking for someone who is willing to speak their mind and provide positive constructive challenge when needed. The role holder will work as part of a team to take decisions for the good of Greater Manchester.

Our strategy commits to establishing a Victims & Survivors Advisory Panel and we intend that this will be a priority, though this will take some time.  It is envisaged that some members of this panel will also sit on the Board.  However, the Board will be in operation prior to the panel, and we want those with lived experience to be involved from the outset.  The positions for those with lived experience will be for a limited period in lieu of the Advisory Panel being appointed and coming into operation.  However, those selected from this process will automatically be given the option to join the Victims & Survivors Advisory Panel.

About us

The Gender-Based Violence Board will be chaired by Greater Manchester’s Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime and Fire, Baroness Beverley Hughes.  The Board will also consist of senior officials from public agencies, such as local councils, NHS, National Probation Service and Greater Manchester Police.  It will be supported by key operational leads from across Greater Manchester.

The Board will have overall responsibility for delivery of the strategy.  In doing so it will:

  • Define key strategic priorities on an annual basis.
  • Guide, oversee, approve and monitor progress of detailed delivery plans prepared to deliver the strategic priorities.
  • Allocate resources and finance where appropriate.
  • Define the desired outcomes, measures and indicators of improvement and success.
  • Hold agencies to account in respect of their performance and contribution towards delivery of the strategy.
  • Establish a cycle of publishing annual plans and progress reports.

It is envisaged that in the first instance that the required commitment will be for several hours every two months, moving to a quarterly basis once the necessary momentum is established.

Expressions of interest should be made addressing why you wish to apply for the position and what you will bring to the Board as a member.  You should also address the essential criteria contained within the accompanying role profile
