Your role:

The GMCA Strategy Team provides core day-to-day support to the Mayor, GMCA leaders and the wider organisation including with advice, briefing and external engagement.

This is an exciting and fast-paced role working within the Transport sub-team, providing high quality support and advice to the Mayor, Transport Commissioner and Active Travel Commissioner.

You will work closely with colleagues across GMCA, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and partner organisations to support the development and delivery of GM’s transport priorities.

It is a wide-ranging and varied role and on any given day you could be briefing the Mayor, Transport Commissioner and Active Travel Commissioner, drafting speaking notes for a conference, working with Transport for Greater Manchester on the implementation of a policy, or engaging with external stakeholders about developments in transport policy.

About you:

You should have a keen interest and excellent knowledge and understanding of transport policy. You will have a good understanding of the roles of national government, city regions and local authorities in the delivery of transport.

Ideally, you would have experience of working with senior politicians or senior officials – and you will need to be able to communicate effectively and concisely with these audiences.

You should be organised and methodical but also enjoy a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities and a demanding workload. You will be expected to work under your own initiative, so we’ll be looking for someone with excellent self-motivation and the ability to take responsibility.

Hybrid working

This role is part of GMCA’s hybrid working scheme. As part of our commitment to ‘Build Back Fairer’ in Greater Manchester following the Covid-19 pandemic, we have evolved our management methods by trusting and empowering staff to deliver their work in the best way that suits the business and their individual needs, and supports health and wellbeing. Our hybrid working policy sets out a flexible approach, combining attendance at our [Manchester city centre office / Fire and Rescue service HQ in Swinton / other location] with remote working, typically from home; the location of work is primarily dictated by the needs of the business: ‘Do what is right for you and the business on that day’. If appointed to the role you will work with your manager to agree and regularly review the best working pattern for you, your team and your work.

This post is classified as politically restricted, as in the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, as the post holder will be required to regularly advise the GMCA, it’s Committees, or communicate with the media on behalf of the GMCA.
